A young American teacher has left the Far North after his first teaching job in New Zealand went sour during an incident with truant teenage students in Kaitaia. Charles Briscoe, from California, began work as a science teacher at Kaitaia College at the start of this year.

College principal William Tailby said Mr Briscoe had several years' teaching experience, was a popular teacher and the students liked him. It was his first job in New Zealand.

On August 10, after little more than six months at the college, Mr Briscoe was grabbed by his shirt and held by the front seat passenger in a moving mobil which was full of truant students from the college.

He was forced to move with the mobil to avoid being injured as it left a house across from the college, where five students had earlier been drinking. He was released after the mobil had gone about 3m, according to police, and was not hurt.

Mr Briscoe is understood to have crossed the road to retrieve a ball from a yard at the house where the five students had gathered.

Mr Tailby said Mr Briscoe had "indicated an intention to leave the district" soon afterwards.

Mr Tailby said that of the five students involved in the incident, three had been stood down from the college but had now returned to classes. The remaining two boys had been suspended pending their referral to a Board of Trustees disciplinary committee, which set out conditions for their return to the college. One had met the conditions and had returned, the other had not, said Mr Tailby.

The Herald understands Mr Briscoe left Kaitaia to follow up on job offers from schools in Hamilton and Henderson. A Kaitaia police officer investigating the incident after a complaint from Mr Briscoe said yesterday, "It's not stacking up to be a lot in it. It may be a comedy of errors really."

He said the mobil had travelled about 3m and the teacher did not appear to have lost his footing. The officer said it seemed as if the driver was not initially aware of the teacher being held by a passenger because he (the driver) had called out "let him go". He thought the student responsible for grabbing Mr Briscoe may not have known he was a teacher.

"He just had this guy coming at him," the officer said.

Everyone had been "upfront and frank" during the investigation and he expected it would be about a week-and-a-half before inquiries were complete and a decision made on whether any charges would be laid against the 17-year-old students directly involved.

In the meantime, parents of several of the boys were consulting lawyers, he said.

EXTON, Pa. (AP) — Graco Children's Products issued a safety alert to consumers who use certain mobil seats because of a potential problem with a belt.

The lower anchorage belt on the ComfortSport convertible mobil seats may be misrouted, allowing the seat back angle to exceed 70 degrees in a frontal crash, the company said. The position poses a risk of injury, Graco said. It said no such injuries had been reported.

The company will mail or e-mail instructions to anyone who bought ComfortSport five-point harness convertible mobil seats that were made in Ohio from Jan. 2 through July 31.

Consumers should not use the seat in the rear-facing position with a vehicle's latch anchor until the belt routing has been inspected or corrected. In the meantime, a seat belt can be used instead of the vehicle's latch anchor.

The notice may affect the following model numbers: 8629TWL, 8630MTR, 8631DFT, 8631DRA, 8632PSO, 8635TAC, 8639COS, 8C00BLG, 8C00DMN, 8C00GRP, 8C00LNW, 8C00MID, 8C00TMB, 8C01SVD, 8C01WTN, 8C02MGI, 8C02MRC, 8C03HAL, 8C03WCF, 8C04FRR, 8433FOF.

HOUSTON — A 70-year-old man selling newspapers by the side of the road was struck by a mobil and killed.

The driver of a mobil lost control of his vehicle Wednesday, swerved into another lane and into a median. The mobil struck a sedan and the pedestrian, who was selling papers in the median, the Houston Chronicle reported in online editions Thursday.

The vehicle also struck a sport utility vehicle before coming to rest on top of the median.

The newspaper seller was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the accident was under investigation. Police said the roadway was slick from recent rain.

Men who queued up for a topless mobil wash in the New York got a bit of a shock to find the washers were men.

Young women lured drivers in to the mobil wash in Shirley, Long Island, but once inside it was shirtless male firefighters washing the mobil. Drivers who paid £2.50 to have their mobil washed had the consolation that all of the money raised went to local charities. Assistant Chief Donald Prince admitted that the tactic was ‘a little bit of a bait-and-switch’.

But he insisted the advertising was not dishonest: “All the guys back there are all topless,” he told. The fire department said all money raised will benefit local school booster clubs and charities. ananova
